Nothing beats a California storm! They're so rare and whip up such an unexpected frenzy. Last Friday, it was like a witch stuck her craggy finger into our brothy stew and gave it a flick. The wind whipped hills saw the birds fly crooked, and we saw the same with the drivers. California natives like myself were caught out in cotton shirts and flimsy shoes with no umbrellas. I embrace this frenetic time because after a month long warm spell in a drought, even the sage branches are anxious to shake off their dust with a blender beating dance. Oak tree limbs are parched, threatening to crack and split overhead. The wind plucks out hidden treasures from above, and drops them at the feet of those who dare to go in them thar hills. The finds are worth the endeavor, and so is the nutella hot cocoa and warm fire that awaits at home.
Speaking of treasures, rain brings mushrooms! Let the foraging begin again, soon this month, we're going out with a professional mycologist in search of the elusive chanterelle.

Nutella Hot Cocoa
4 cups whole milk (or almond milk)
2 tablespoons Nutella spread
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons raw sugar
top with fresh whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings and pearls
Heat milk gently in saucepan until it begins to warm and steam. Add the Nutella spread, cocoa powder and raw sugar. Whisk until dissolved and all ingredients combine. Bring to a gentle simmer while stirring. Remove from heat. Serve with your choice of toppings.
