Native Americans named these glossy, chestnut-brown seeds with the lighter interior circle because of their similarity to a buck's eye (the male deer.) The "buckeye" is velvety smooth to the touch and feels good warmed in your hand. The fruit falls to the ground between October and early December, often still nestled in its half opened hull. The leaf formation of this hull was described by the poet Albrecht Duerer as "praying hands."
