In life, a deeper exploration reveals unexpected surprises. At first glance, the Sheoak (she-oak) or Coast Beefwood looks like a tall wispy pine tree with long, segmented branchlets that resemble pine needles. However, she-oaks are actually flowering plants and those “needles” are leaves. These tiny pine "cones" that carpet the ground around the base of the plant after ripening are a woody fruit. This fruit-bearing plant named the “she-oak” with leaves and fruit that mimic conifer needles and pinecones is neither oak nor pine tree. Mother nature surprises. Appearances can be deceiving, so don’t be hasty. Follow the smallest of breadcrumbs on a trail of exploration and discovery.
